Medication Dispensing - Returning Take Home Bottles (TenEleven)

When a dose is dispensed as Take Home, the patient is given a small bottle of medication. A dose is considered Take Home when it is indicated in the schedule, the second part of a split dose, or a patient is dispensed multiple days in advance resulting in a Clinic dose becoming Take Home. In the Medication Dispensing Screen, the Return All Bottles button will be highlighted orange and have a number displayed in parenthesis for each Take Home bottle a patient has yet to return. When the patient returns for their next Clinic dose, they should return their Take Home bottles, however a patient will not always return all their bottles. Follow the steps below for when a patient returns all bottles or some bottles.

NOTE: If you attempt to dispense when a patient has not returned all their Take Home bottles an error message will be displayed, and it will be the clinic’s discretion to determine if they want to dispense to patients that have not returned all their bottles. Click Yes when the pop-up appears to dispense the Methadone to the patient even though they have bottles outstanding. This will not clear the bottle count.

Patient Returns All Bottles

  1. Open the Medication Dispensing Screen by going to Day to Day 🡪 Fill Methadone Orders.
  2. Select the patient from the Patient List.
  3. Ensure the Return All Bottles button is orange and displays how many bottles are missing.
  4. Click the Return All Bottles button to return the bottles.

  5. Return All Bottles should no longer be orange nor display a number.

Patient Returns Some Bottles

  1. Open the Medication Dispensing Screen by going to Day to Day 🡪 Fill Methadone Orders.
  2. Select the patient from the Patient List.
  3. Ensure the Return All Bottles button is orange and displays how many bottles are missing.
  4. Click the Return Bottles Exception button to return the bottles.

  5. Returning Count- Enter the number of bottles being returned.
    Out Count- Displays the total count of Take Home bottles outstanding.
  6. Reason for Returning Less- Enter the patient’s reason for not returning all the bottles.
  7. Clear checked out bottle count after return (Optional)- Check to clear out the bottle count even though the patient did not return all their bottles.
  8. Return Bottles- Select to return the bottles.

  9. This will only return some of the bottles (subtracting the Returning Count from the Out Count). The Return All Bottles will remain orange and display the number of Take Home bottles still outstanding. It is the clinic’s discretion to determine if they want to dispense to patients that have bottles “out”.
